Full Description

Human mandible kicked out of a rabbit burrow and found by a member of the public. Possibly associated with the graves excavated in 1989 and thought to be the remains of victims of a shipwreck. (SMR.351)

Possible confusion as to the earlier excavation location as outlined below

The location shown in the D & E extract doesn’t match its grid reference. The SMR shows the same location with the correct grid reference for that spot.
It is possible that the wall at the carpark has been mistaken for the wall for the cemetery.
The possibilities are; the jawbone relates to the original excavation (if you look at Fig 14 three individuals did not have their heads recovered; presumably this was the working edge of the road works). Alternatively this is a different skeleton and burial, that is associated with the wreck or the last option is that it’s a completely unrelated burial.

Location for SMR.351 is correct, D&E grid reference was erroneous. The spoil from the works at the edge of the cemetery was spread out alongside the original road at this location to facilitate later road widening. It seems highly likely that this mandible originated from the burials associated with SMR.351. This information came from C. Macleod (CnES Roads) who worked on this job (Pers comms - 19/10/2020).
