Full Description

Tidal action had exposed a peat layer beneath the sand which shows the remains of tree stumps and roots. These tree remains are likely to be from one of the two main phases of woodland growth in the Western Isles, the first between 8,000 and 9,000 years ago characterised by willow and birch. The second phase between 5,000 and 3,900 years ago, characterised by willow and birch and with additional evidence of Scots Pine also becoming established.
