Full Description

Following previous site clearance for a housing plot in Dec 2018, large amounts of shell were noted in the spoil heaps close to the main road. A subsequent site visit noted that this former midden consisted approximately of 90% cockle shells with a lesser occurance of limpit and mussel. Occaissional fragments of non diagnostic ceramic and glass sherds were also observed. The eastern most spoil heap also contained some large stones, possibly indicating a former structure. No insitu remains were observed on the site.

It seems likely that these remains may relate to part of the pre-crofting settlement annotated as 'Chillibost' and depicted on The Map of Harris by William Bald (1805).
Any further development in this area, in particular close to the river should be archaeologically monitored.
