Full Description
Township of Gearraidh Scoir contained within a boundary dyke. The area comprises of machair soils towards the coastal edge in the east and heavier heather covered peat moorland in the west and north. The 1st ed 6" OS map sheet (1849) shows a short 'y' shaped forked track with a settlement of 5 roofed buildings and enclosures laid out along each side of the eastern fork. By the 2nd ed 6" OS map sheet (1895) only a vague trackway is depicted.
The settlement location is identifible by the forked trackway which was notible due to water logging. One heavily overgrown large rectangular structure was readily identifiable, it comprised of turf walls with a concave interior area, its dimensions are 14m x 5m. The whole southern and eastern part of the enclosed area shows evidence of feannagan, as noted at the site at Gob Ghearraidh Scoir Mhor (SMR.5001). A more though survey of the area is likely to identify further structures.
