Full Description

A subcircular grassy mound located in a raised area above the river. The surrounding landscape is characterised by extensive peatland. The mound comprises of earth with stone poking out in places over it. There is a roughly rectangular depression on its south western side with other shallower scoops elsewhere. The general appaerance gives the impression of having been robbed out / quarried. Prior to this it seems reasonable that this may have been utilized as a sheiling site, although none are show on the 6" 1st edition Ordnance Survey map sheet. However the overall size of the mound and the appearance of stone in an otherwise peatland environment hints that its origins are likely to have been prehistoric. There is a similar site on the opposite side of the river (MWE150173).
Dimensions 13m x 14m height 1.6m
