Full Description
A subcircular grassy mound located in a raised area above the river. The surrounding landscape is characterised by extensive peatland and former peat cuttings. The mound comprises of earth with occaissional stone visible, but shows only irregular scoops and depressions; additionally there is a barely dicernible system of lazybeds around it. The general appaerance of the mound gives the impression of having been robbed out / quarried.
A study of current AP's confirms that the mound is located centrally within a triangular field of lazy beds bounded by peat headlands to the north and east and a dyke to the west. The cultivation ridging continues slightly towards the river and further to the south along the river bank. These observations indicate a probable small scale farmstead as the final phase of occupation on this site.
No features are depicted on the 6" 1st edition Ordnance Survey map sheet. However the overall size of the mound and the appearance of stone in an otherwise peatland environment hints that the mounds origins are likely to have been prehistoric. There is a similar site on the opposite side of the river (MWE150172).
