Full Description

This location is poorly understood, it comprises of current crop fields situated above the west side of Traigh nam Faoghailean. The field edge running along the coast is a combination of eroding machair and stable grass all of which is prone to slumping. Given the recorded sites of the early church and burial ground (SMR.566) and the extensive midden deposits (SMR.570) and at other places due north; it seems likely that the two sites could be associated with an as yet unknown settlement. The additional finds of a human skull (circa 2012) and 1/2 an incomplete rotary quern (2021) at this location may back this up. Other unidentified stone features were noted by the Archaeology Service in the upper section face, along a 50m length, while recovering the quern stone.
The area around Traigh nam Faoghailean appaers to indicate a shifting of settlement focus through time from possibly Iron Age to Early Medieval at Ard an Runair / Eilean Trostan and moving around to medieval and post medievel at Kilmuir & Hougharry.
