Full Description
This area was identified as having a high potential for archaeological activity during the the desk based assessment and walkover survey phase of this project circa 2018. Following on from archaeological deposits being identified during a watching brief for a Scottish Water pipeline a subsiquent excavation of the developent area was carried out. The well preserved associated features identified in the development corridor comprised of a series of pits, several fire pits, curvi-linear stone alignments and a post-hole. Associated finds were made up of craggan ware ceramic sherds (some of which had been decorated), animal and fish bone and a copper alloy token. It was noted that these deposits were not the same as might be expected from a domestic midden, but were more consistant with a place of work and processing. It seems highly probabe that the excavation identifed a small part of a larger feature; almost certainly associated with MWE150170. The interpretation for this site is of an animal processing station / likely, a sheep fank. The pottery sherds and token would indicate a late medieval / early postmedieval date for these features.
