Full Description
A sub circular crannog located in the south central area of Loch Marabhat. The 'islet' comprises of peaty soil with grass, rushes and occaisional heather, dimensions are approx 14m x 12m. A conical shaped stone cairn approx 1.2m in height is situated on top and is located adjacent to a partially buried circular stone structure, with approx diameter of 5m. This structure has possible additional elements, both internally and externally; however this just be the result of collapse debris. The visible stratigraphy of the islet comprises of peaty topsoil overlying a significant layer of large stones, visible all around the perimeter of the 'islet'. There are also numerous stones surrounding the islet below the water. Beneath the stone layer is a further peaty deposit (roughly at the water level of the loch at time of visit). This layer contains well preserved organic remains of brushwood fragments (birch), two wooden posts and several neolithic ceramic sherds were also noted.
The overall condition of the site is good; however the western edge does show signs of erosion.
This site is a crannog of neolithic origin and has exceptional research potentail.
