Full Description

Decaying hulk of a wooden boat, lying on the foreshore in an inlet on the north side of Rubha Bhuailt. Stone ballast is visible in the bottom of the hull, along with the remains of metal machinery. The hull is carvel-built, with a transom-stern. The hulk is probably the Excelsior, a wooden Zulu-type fishing vessel, which was identified during the desk-based assessment. In the NMRS, the wreck is recorded as lying alongside Lochboisdale pier, where it was stranded in 1906. The hulk was moved to its present location in the 1950s, in advance of a Royal visit (Calum MacLellan pers. Comm.).
Uist Archaeology 09/2009

A beached boat is visible on the 1965 aerial photograph. The 2009 survey identified the boat, and noted that it was probabaly the excelsior, a wooden type fishing vessel, which was moved in advance of the royal visit. The 2011 survey recorded the baseline condition of the boat, which had deteriated since since the 2009 survey.
