BY85: Pier. Coast edge on foreshore bedrock. Modern concrete platform and ramp down below high water mark. Although a tarmac-surfaced road was immediately built linking the landing place and the site of the lighthouse, no provision was made for the easy handling of materials on the island, which indicates the ease with which it was possible to disembark and transfer materials on the rock shelves of the north shore. A derrick was installed later to help with some of the more awkward and heavy items needed for the lighthouse, but the construction of the pier did not take place until around 1870.
