Full Description

NL58NE 5 5648 8328.

There is a denuded shell-midden on a bare ridge at the N end of a bay on the east side of Mingulay. It adjoins the hillock on which stands the burial-ground.
Apart from shells, the midden contained hammer-stones split by fire, bones and teeth. Two 'basin-stones' also from the midden are preserved in the chapel enclosure (NL58SE 7).
J Wedderspoon 1915.

NL 5648 8328. What appears to be the site of the shell-midden referred to by Wedderspoon (J Wedderspoon 1915) was located on the NW side of the small hillock occupied by the burial-ground at NL 5649 8327. Only a few shells were visible, and the midden has probably been covered by drifting sand. The two basin stones lie in the chapel enclosure, at the NE end of the chapel. They each measure c. 0.7 x 0.5 x.0.2m, with a large groove or hollow in the centre.
Visited by OS (W D J) 19 May 1965; J Wedderspoon 1915.
