Full Description

NL69NE 1 6890 9903.

(NL 6890 9903) Two standing stones are situated on the summit of the ridge Druim a Charra "on the spur running down eastwards from Heaval to Breivig, about 250 yards north of Cruchain", about 250 ft above sea level. One is standing (inclined to the SSW) and is 9ft 2ins high and 6ft 10ins in girth at the base. The other, 14 1/2 ft to the south, is prostrate and is 10ft 7ins long. It must have stood originally about 24 1/2 ft from the one standing.
RCAHMS 1928.

The standing stone is as described above, but the fallen stone to the south has been broken, leaving two pieces measuring 1.3m and 1.1m.length. There is a further earthfast piece of stone, 0.8m long, nearby which may also have been part of the broken stone.

S19 (NL689990) Standing stone and broken second stone lying nearby...The standing stone is 2,74 m high above ground level, and has a maximum width of 0.86 m and thickness of 0.5 m. The second stone is broken into two pieces, the larger measuring 1.35 m and the smaller 0.9 m in length. From the angle at which the smaller stone is narrowing, we estimate it has lost about 0.35 - 0.45 m from its tip, so that the original height of the entire stone would have been 2.6-2.7 m, almost exactly matching that of the standing stone. At its widest it was 0.94 m across. We think that the fallen stone tapered to a central rounded tip, while the standing stone tapered asymmetrically from one side only. The two stones stand in a flat shelf approached through a shallow defile at the top of a steep slope from the low pasture immediately behind Brevig Bay. The stones overlook this area rather than Brevig Bay itself which is largely masked from the view of the stones by a low rise immediately south-east of the stones. Prehistoric ritual site.

The monument known as Breibhig, standing stones, Barra, comprises two standing stones, one prostrate and broken, situated towards the back of a terrace above the township of Brevig on the SE slopes of Heaval. The area to be scheduled is circular with a diameter of 25m, to include the standing stone and an area around in which associated remains may survive. The above ground remains of existing field boundaries (now redundant) are excluded from the scheduling.
