Full Description

NB43NE 3 45 36.

Flint axe found 1914 'Near the gravel bed of a peat bank, about 10ft below the surface at Tong, Lewis.' The axe is of mottled grey flint 4 15/16 ins long, 1 13/16 ins broad, and 7/8 ins thick, flaked all over and ground only at the cutting edge, but highly polished near where the haft had been fixed. Purchased for NMAS (accession number AF 687).
Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1928.

Find of very large flint core/handaxe. Handed in by a Tong resident.

The precise findspot of both the axe, and the possible handaxe, are unknown. MML 23.6.99
