Full Description
NB43SW 1 4207 3322.
17th century coin hoard found 25th May, 1954 by a pupil of Lews Castle College. The hoard consisted of 120 coins, ranging from Elizabeth of England to Charles II and included Scottish, English, Irish, Netherlands and Swedish issues, contained in a crude globular pot, 4 1/2 ins. maximum diameter of normal Hebridean type. The four latest coins were dated 1669 but all were somewhat worn and a date of deposit a few years later is probable. Graham 'unearthed it accidentally with his foot while climbing the steep bank of the Shoe Burn which runs past the College. The site was about 20 yards NW of the bridge crossing the burn and 20ft up from the level of the stream... about 100 yards from the site of the old Seaforth Lodge, which figured in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1719.'
R Kerr and R B K Stevenson 1958.
