Full Description

(Location cited as NB 422 330). Stornoway harbour, built c. 1780, improved in the 19th century and later. There are two piers, a breakwater and extensive quays, of masonry and concrete construction.
J R Hume 1977.

Begun largely as a fishing harbour c. 1785, the quays and piers being built along the river at North Beach, Cromwell Street and Bayhead. In 1865 Alan Stevenson provided a 45.7m-long steamboat wharf at the W end of South Beach. Further developement along South Beach took place in 1881 and 1890-4. The followed a major reconstruction and extension by Henderson and Nicol in 1926-35, Stevenson's wooden wharf being replaced by the concrete King Edward Wharf. This wharf was extended in 1947-51 by Archibald Henderson and Partners, who also built the causeway to Goat Island at the harbour's E end, and gave that island a slipway. Concrete is now the dominant material.
On the King Edward Wharf, Art Deco Ferry Offices of 1935.
J Gifford 1992.

Improved with a new ferry terminal and jetty 1997. MML 23.9.99
