Full Description
NB54NW 3 5267 4587.
(NB 527 458) "Beinn-tharaburt: a hill. The loch of Ben Taraburt lies S. with an island and the ruins of a house upon it. There must have been a staran, or stepping-stones that gave the name 'taraburt'; thuerra-burt, causeway between two waters."
D MacIvor 1934.
At NB 5267 4587 there is a stony oval mound upon what has been a small island now joined to the shore by a marshy neck. The mound measures c. 7.5m E-W by c. 5.5m transversely, and 0.5m high, and may be the remains of a cairn. An area of stones around the south arc of the peninsula seems to be scattered material from the mound rather than part of a causeway, of which latter there is no trace.
Surveyed at 1/10,000.
Visited by OS (A A) 14 June 1969.
What may be a single unroofed shieling-hut is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1853, sheet 10). A mound is shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1974).
