Full Description

The emigrant ship Annie Jane left Liverpool in September 1853 with over 450 persons, but was wrecked on Vatersay on the morning of 29 September with only 102 survivors.
Information from R Charnley to Glasgow Herald, 24 July 1980.

6" 1st ed Ordnance Survey sheet (1880) indicates the northwest corner of the beach as an area of burial. The annotation covers both the dunes and the land above the cliffs and reads 'Graves of 280 Shipwrecked Emigrants'.
