Full Description

The discovery of a burial is recorded at NB 4367 5947. This find was made on 31 January 1993 and was subsequently excavated by Carol Cunningham and the Lewis and Harris Archaeology Group.
The find comprised a reasonably well preserved inhumation burial in a simple unlined grave. The body was on its side, extended with legs slightly flexed. A complete, decorated pot was found above the skull by the Russells and lifted before excavation. This is now in Museum nan Eilean. A rough bone pin was also found at the back of the skull and a corroded iron pin or brooch at the front of the neck.
The pot is 170mm high, its diameter at the base 56mm and at the top, 86mm. It is decorated with a groove or channel running horizontally around it at the top of the body and above this a running chevron pattern in the form of three grooves and above this immediately below the rim a band of small impressions. A drawing and photograph will be forwarded when completed. A tentative date for the pot would be 200BC - 300AD.
Information from Mr R Langhorne (Western Isles Islands Council), 5 April 1993.
