Full Description

NL69SW 46 6420 9465

VS 27: A series of house platforms, some with stone revetments on downslope side, terraced along the foot of the hillside overlooking the bay. The platforms suggest buildings between 6 and 25m long, and 4 to 6m wide. There are no traces of substantial buildings visible, and the buildings were probably mostly if not all of timber. This is the site of herring fishing village which existed here in the late 19th - early 20th century, and can be seen illustrated on postcards of that time.

5. Vatersay Bay (VS 27)
At least twelve rectangular building platforms cut into the hillside, some with traces of stone slabs forming the base for timber structures. The longest platforms are up to 25m, the smallest 4m. The site of the herring fishing settlement, which can be seen, on postcards from the first decade of the 20th century, to consist of several dozen buildings.
