Full Description

T28A: This kiln is situated immediately SW of NL69NW 7.41, and is very similar to it, although smaller and without the internal step. It is of the same basic design being an open-ended sub-rectangular outline formed with stones laid flat rather than on edge. The length is 1.14m, width 0.46m, and the depth averages 0.1m. Orientation is NNE-SSW with the southern end being open and almost flush with the ground surface. Stone robbing may have occasioned the irregular nature of the N side.
The interior of the kiln was infilled with a deposit of very dark brown to black loam soil. There were no significant inclusions, and an apparent lack of any evidence to indicate sustained burning within the structure. It is suggested that this kiln was used for burning kelp.
