'This wartime airfield grew out of a pre-war grass aerodrome used by Scottish Airways, known as Balivanich. The three runways at Benbecula used a method of construction known as 'sand carpet', which consisted of bitumen laid directly over compacted sand, resulting in a flexible surface'.
