(NF 6527 0144) Standing Stones (NR) (Human Remains found)
OS 6'map, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1904)
Two standing stones, 36 ft apart, stand in a line NE-SW, some 80 yds west of the main road at the township of Borve, on a sandy machair at an elevation of less than 50 ft above sea-level (RCAHMS 1928).
The Name Book notes that human remains have been found near the stones at various times.
RCAHMS 1928, visited 5 June 1915; Name Book 1878.
These stones are as described above. The northernmost is 1.4m high by 0.6m wide by 0.2m thick and leans to the east. The other stone has fallen and is now almost completely covered: no dimensions could be taken.
No information was found regarding human remains found near the stones, although a Viking burial (NF60SE 14) may be associated with them. Visited by OS (W D J) 15 May 1965.
B4 (NF653014) A standing stone...It survives little more than 1 m in height, but was 1.7 m when recorded by the RCAHMS in 1915. Sunk into the sandy machair of Borve headland it may well be taller and better preserved than it appears. A second, fallen, stone almost 3 m long was noted by the RCAHMS but is now represented (if at all) only by a short block of gneiss, lying a few metres from the upright stone.
