Full Description
NF70NW 1 7252 0818.
(NF 7252 0818) Circular base of what is apparently a broch inside and around which is a shell midden with pott- ery. Inside the building, about 12 ins deep in the blown sand, is the skeleton of a yound man laid E-W with no grave goods. The skeleton was not removed or disturbed. Information from C F Tebbutt, 1959 (visited 1957).
The very scanty remains of Dunan Ruadh are situated on a small promontory at the southern end of Traigh na Reill, a sandy bay on the west side of the island of Fuday.
The only part of the structure visible is about 15ft of the southern arc of the outer foundation stones with two courses superimposed for a short distance.
'This small piece of structure looks very like building seen in brochs'. RCAHMS 1928; visited 15 June 1915.
Dunan Ruadh is as described by the RCAHMS. The site has been partly obscured by blown sand, except in the SE arc where the wall foundations and shell midden are still visible. No pottery was found, neither was the skeleton mentioned by Tebbutt.
Visited by OS (R B) 20 May 1965.
