Full Description

NF72NW 14 726 286.

A bronze pin with mushroom head bearing radial grooves, from a settlement site at Sliganach Kildonan, South Uist - NF 726 286 - was given to the NMAS by Dr Alistair Maclean, Daliburgh, South Uist.
Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1966.

Dr Maclean sited the find spot of the bronze pin to about 75 yards southof the Standing Stone (NF72NW 3); he found the pin in 1963. He knows nothing about a settlement site in the area. No trace of a settlement was seen in the area centred on NF 726 286
Visited by OS (E G C) 24 May 1965.

RMS GS 199. Mushroom-headed pin of type attributed to 5th and 6th centuries AD, but probably continuing later. This example found associated with rim of grass-tempered late wheelhouse-type pottery.
L Laing 1973.

Laing also notes RMS BK 117 as having a similar provenance to this, but the NMAS 1892 Catalogue locates it on the Fendom Sands, Tain. See NH88SW 7.

RMS GS 203. Nail-headed pin without insets.
L Laing 1973.

This object is probably to be identified with NF72NW 14, as the other recorded discoveries from this area are all of ring-headed type. See also NF72NW 23.
