Full Description

NF72NW 16 centred on 7433 2968

Centred on NF 7433 2968 is a large area of depopulation comprising the remains and foundations of 29 buildings with associated enclosures. The buildings vary in size from 5.0m x 6.0m to 16.0m x 6.0m with walls generally c1.0m high, though in one or two cases c2.0m high. The area has been re-occupied by modern croft buildings and fields. The factor of South Uist Estate stated that the area was known as Bornish but that there was no documentary proof of this. The date of depopulation was about 1845 according to the clerk to South Uist District Council. Visited by OS (W D J) 11 May 1965

A township comprising forty-one unroofed buildings and two enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire, Hebrides, South Uist etc. 1881, sheet liii). Twenty-two roofed and twenty-seven unroofed buildings are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1971).
