Full Description

NF72NW 18 723 295.

In the machair, some 400m W. of Loch Bornish, in an area of eroded sand at NF 723 2953, an enclosure and a small cairn have been exposed.
The enclosure is sub-rectangular on plan measuring 32.0m E-W by 26.0m transversely and is bounded by the footings of a rubble wall varying between 1.6 and 2.3m wide. The NE corner has been destroyed; there is a probable entrance at the SE corner. A Viking ring-headed bronze pin was found 10m E. of the entrance during fieldwork and has been presented to NMAS. About 85m SSE of this enclosure there are the fragmentary remains of a similar structure.
At NF 7239 2954 there is a small cairn measuring 5m in diameter and 0.4m in height. Two stones, set at right angles to each other in the top of the cairn, probably represent the remains of a cist. The eroded area is littered with concentrations of midden material, which overlie the large enclosure and cairn: bone, shell, deer antler, pottery and iron work were found by the field investigator.
Surveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (J T T) 19 May 1965.
