Full Description
NF73SE 3 unlocated.
"Ancient remains" in South Uist were described verbally in 1856 by Mr C Gordon to Sir Henry Dryden shortly before the former's death.
A mound of sand "near the west shore, and nearly level with the sea" was opened by Gordon in 1855 and found to contain the remains of a circular building about 12ft inside diameter with walls about 5ft thick and 8ft high. There were two entrances, one about 4ft square and the other about 2 1/2ft square. There were four recesses within the walls (Dryden questions the number) all roofed. Finds including a copper needle, a human thigh bone, whale verterbrea, a knife, a comb, bone articles and 6 black stone dishes (2 1/2ins across) were donated to the NMAS HD 12-16. H Dyrden 1860; NMAS 1892.
This wheel-house could not be located.
