A complex archaeological landscape of pre and post-improvement crofting settlement. To the S is an extensive system of head-dykes (NB424NE 51) which may be partly associated with these townships.
A complex series of settlement with at least two phases of townships is discernable on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis Ross-shire 1853, sheet 7).
The first phase is two townships and outlying farmsteads (see NB24NE 33.01 - 24.04).
The second phase is a linear arrangement of buildings of a typical crofting township (see NB24NE 33.05).
This in turn has been replaced by the present crofting township and associated field-system shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1974).
South Shawbost was served by a number of horizontal corn mills. These have been recorded separately (see NB24NE 22, 34 and NB24NW 11-14, 17).
Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 23 January 1997.
