A complex series of settlement with at least three phases of township are discernable on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis Ross-shire 1853, sheet 7). To the S is an extensive system of head-dykes (NB424NE 51) which may be partly associated with these townships.
The first phase is a scattered arrangement of small townships (see NB24NE 24.01 - 24.03).
The second phase is a linear arrangement of buildings of a typical crofting township (see NB24NE 24.04).
The final phase is a new crofting township (see NB24SE 24.05) which may have been built to replace the earlier crofting township. In this phase two lines of well spaced croft houses have been constructed with the one to the E overlying the early crofting township (NB24NE 24.05). It would appear that this phase was being completed when the OS surveyed the area. The crofting field-system is only to be found on the modern OS 1:10000 map (1974).
North Shawbost was served by a number of horizontal corn mills. These have been recorded separately (see NB24NE 18-21, 25-6).
