Full Description

SABS 36j: Site of black house. NB 37113 54163

Rectangular structure, aligned SW to NE, set in enclosure of low eroded banks. Shown as a ruin on the 1st edition map (1853). Rectangular, turf and stone walls, considerably eroded. 17 x 10m externally, 14 x 3m internally, with collapse evident around structure, and divisions within the buildings are still just discernable on the NW and SW sides, but obscured by collapsed stonework. Several stones scattered around structure now evidenced by grassy tussocks. Stonework evident at the SW end of the building may show a curved wall, possibly a kiln. The building is lower at the NE end (the byre).
