Full Description

A much denuded and robbed out stone and turf structure in an exposed location. Originally appaered on the ground and during the evalation stage as a small sub rectangular structure, however full excavation of this feature indicated a site of increased complexity and at least more than one phase of activity. The findings of the excavation would seem to indicate a structure of a domestic nature ; however this use of the site may not have been consistent and it may have been reused as a temporary shelter in other periods.
A precise date range for this site remains elusive. The ceramic assemblage indicated a date range of 13th - 15th centuries,; however other sherds may pre or post date this range. Burnt residue from a ceramic sherd gave a C14 date of c.1591-1647. It is important to note the association of this structure with the numerous settlement remains that are present on this hillside as recorded in SMR.1518.
The archaeological remains excavated at this site are important as a rare example of a medieval - 17th century Western Isles domestic dwelling. The difficulty in finding comparitive material with which to date the ceramic assemblage illustrates the rarity of such sites in the archaeological record.
