The development of the area can be seen in a comparison between the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1853, sheet 3) and the current edition of the OS 1:10000 maps.
The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map shows a linear crofting township whch may have replaced earlier more scattered settlements probably represented by small ruins within the crofting field-system.
The first linear crofting township would appear to have been replaced by a second and new crofting system positioned along the former head-dyke depicted on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map. Four buildings adjacent to and built into the head-dyke are shown on the 1st edition of the Os 6-inch map and may be the beginings of this replacement crofting township.
The area to the S of the head-dyke may represent an earlier township or a contemporary development of common land by enclosure, similar to that at Arnol.
This re-development and replacement of the crofting township is repeated at other township sites in Lewis such as Arnol and Bragar.
