A complex landscape of pre and post-improvement townships. At least two phases of development are decernable from the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis Ross-shire 1853, sheet 8).
The 1st phase is a number of small groups or clusters of buildings which could be townships on the coast and within the present improved land (see NB45NW 48.01 -.05). The dipersed nature of the unroofed structures and enclosures within the improved ground (see NB45NW 48.06) may also be part of this 1st phase.
The second phase is the linear crofting township (NB45NW 48.06) laid along the S side of a road though the middle of the improved ground. This is similar to those elsewhere on Lewis, namely Barvas, Bragar and South Shawbost. What appears to be expansion occurs to the SW where an area of land has been enclosed and a small organised crofting settlement has been started (NB45NW 48.08). This remains, as does the present crofting township though buildings are now found on both sides of the road, more so on the N side.
Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 30 April 1998.

A township, comprising thirty roofed buildings, seven of which are annotated as ruins, twenty-eight unroofed buildings and thirty-three enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Isle of Lewis Ross-shire 1853, sheet 5). A crofting township, comprising ninety-eight roofed, twenty-four unroofed buildings, enclosures and a large field-system are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1974).
Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 10 January 1997.
